Forgiveness

Forgiveness is not merely what people say, nor is it produced by harsh punishment. It is reached through a process of accountability, justice, and moral recognition. In this sense, forgiveness is achieved through institutionalization: accountability is established, responsibility is recognized, and justice is carried out so that forgiveness can have lasting meaning.

Through this process, a person may come to be forgiven by God. Once genuine forgiveness has been granted, the matter is forgiven. It is not meant to be continually revived, repeatedly used against the person, or treated as though forgiveness never occurred. True forgiveness therefore carries a sense of finality.

In short, once forgiven, forgiven. The forgiven wrong belongs to the past rather than being endlessly brought forward again.
