College journalism thrives even without formal journalism programs

Student-run newspapers are flourishing across U.S. campuses, many of which lack dedicated journalism majors. While roughly 1,100 college papers exist, fewer than half are housed at schools with academic journalism programs. National data show only about 120 accredited journalism programs nationwide, yet prominent outlets such as the Daily Bruin, Michigan Daily, Harvard Crimson and Cornell Sun operate at universities without such departments. This demonstrates that hands‑on experience, motivated students, and institutional support can sustain vibrant campus newsrooms despite the absence of formal curricula. [[1]]
