A new quantum‑sensing platform built at the University of Waterloo demonstrates that a single molecule can serve as a detector of atomic‑scale magnetic signals. By extending the sensor’s spin coherence to about 400 µs—roughly sixty times longer than conventional methods—the team achieved enough sensitivity to observe the magnetic signatures of roughly ten nuclear spins using a mechanical readout. This force‑detection approach, highlighted by Dr. Raffi Budakian, opens a pathway toward mapping the structure of individual proteins, a major step for drug discovery. While the current experiments employ about 140 sensor molecules under cryogenic conditions and fall short of imaging a single protein, the demonstrated ability to probe small spin groups promises deeper insight into biomolecular function and could accelerate the design of more effective therapeutics.
