Finance teams are now universally using AI, with all 270 surveyed CFOs confirming its presence in their processes. Yet the rapid uptake has created a heavy "verification burden"—96% of CFOs spend at least 10% of their time checking AI outputs, and 8% spend more than half their week on it, amounting to an overall 26% of the work week dedicated to fact‑checking.

Key developments: the Datarails 2026 CFO Sentiments Survey reveals that while AI tools like Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT and Claude are entrenched in daily finance activities, auditability concerns dominate (75% of respondents) alongside worries about accuracy, hallucinations and regulatory compliance. Only a small minority—5% for board‑ready reports and 4% for month‑end close—trust AI without human review. Despite these challenges, over half of finance leaders (53%) plan to expand AI licenses in the coming year, even as a third have already overspent their AI budgets.

Why it matters: The paradox of full AI adoption paired with extensive manual verification signals a critical bottleneck for finance efficiency. Mis‑verified data can lead to inaccurate reporting, regulatory risk, and erode stakeholder confidence. The shift toward redeploying staff to higher‑value tasks (60% of CFOs) hinges on solving these verification issues, making reliable, auditable AI outputs a strategic imperative.

What to watch next: 1) Development of governed "finance operating systems" that provide a single source of truth—currently achieved by only 4% of firms. 2) Emerging vendor solutions focusing on AI auditability and provenance to reduce the 26% verification load. 3) Continued budget pressures as 32% of CFOs exceed AI spend, prompting tighter financial controls and possible consolidation of AI tools.
