Enterprises are rapidly moving edge computing out of pilot projects, with 62 % of IoT‑focused organizations already adopting edge architectures and 78 % of deployments now beyond the proof‑of‑concept stage, according to Omdia research. Security concerns still top the list of obstacles, cited by 31 % of respondents, but the promise of lower latency, reduced data‑transfer costs and tighter AI integration is driving the surge.

Telecom tower owners are also betting big on the trend. Barclays lifted its price target for American Tower, highlighting the company’s edge‑computing growth potential at its tower sites, a move that helped the stock jump more than 9 %.

On the AI front, venture‑backed edge‑inference is being positioned as a more sustainable alternative to massive off‑grid gas plants. Katie Clasen of Prelude Ventures notes that inference workloads—forecast to make up 60 % of AI demand by 2030—are ideal for distributed edge servers that can tap existing renewable‑energy capacity.

Finally, the hardware ecosystem is evolving. Embedded systems, now responsible for nearly a third of the global electronics market, have reached a valuation of USD $585 billion as edge AI pushes designers toward security‑first, software‑centric solutions.

What to watch next: (1) how vendors address the security gaps that still impede broader edge roll‑outs; (2) expansion of tower‑site edge services as telcos monetize compute at the edge; and (3) the scaling of low‑MW edge sites that can capture surplus renewable power for AI inference workloads.
